Is Web Design Becoming More Like Print Design?
Are tips and techniques that make print design so great creeping onto the web? As font barriers get broken down, are the two mediums blending?
Yes and no.
The article by Marco Weskamp of Flipboard is certainly worth reading. Great design look at the evolution of user design and print design. But I do take a little exception to it.
Is web design becoming more like print? No. Is print design becoming more like web design? Nope. Is web development evolving to the point where good design can happen? Bingo.
Good, smart user interface design is finally being utilized not because of designers hadn’t wanted it, but because the web has “grown up” enough to handle it. Print design has had a few hundred years jump on web design and really has only been made flexible for about a decade. In that time the art of user interface design has really taken shape.
But most importantly about these two design mediums is how they handle content. Print is do-it and done. Web is dynamic and changing. Keeping an effective design concept in an ever changing space moves to a level beyond what print could ever do.
To say that web design is becoming like print design is equivalent to saying design is devolving. Good design has come to the web and will not become like print, but will go far beyond what print design could ever be.
